I’ve tried to make this trip a couple of times over the last year but have been unsuccessful due how bad the dirt roads are to the church. Its so bad I had to take our Subaru Forester. There isn’t much information on the Piedmont Church in Jefferson County, Mississippi. My local contact did some checking and pulled the deed records on the church. According to the Jefferson County records the church property was deeded in 1855.  That’s all the history we know about the church.

She did say this was a small family church that mostly the Cupit family and those that married into the family attended this church. At some point in recent history the families moved on and left the area. We know there are still some Cupids living in the area but the church is no longer being maintained.

Getting to the church can be difficult. I tried several times to get to the church in my old Scion xB. But between the mud and the rutted out road, I was only able to make it a few miles down the dirt road before I had to turn back.

2011 Forester Subaru Exploring the Backroads of MississippiEventually I made the trip out there in our 2011 Subaru Forest and made it with ease. Even though it rained the day before the road wasn’t to muddy. Only a few places that I found were impassible in a car or low riding SUV.

The Church sits deep in the secluded woods surrounded by majestic pine trees with only a few hunting camps or backwoods homesteads near by. It was so quiet out there that it was peaceful. I enjoyed the visit and plan to visit again.

The church itself is in bad shape but still a very sturdy building and could be restored. The windows are knocked out and everything of value has been removed. Its just a shell of its former self. The doors are locked but looking the through the windows its relativity clean. There is even a new broom and dust pan leaning against one of the few church pews. For an abandoned church its pretty clean. Its needs to be swept out again.

Through my research of old churches I found that many of these old churches may look abandoned but they are still being cleaned up and watched. They may even hold family and congregation reunions.

    Great pic thanks

  2. My ancestors according genealogy records lived here and I think are buried here. My great great grandfather has a state plaque in these woods. Dr. Jose Rodriguez.

    • Thanks for commenting. There is a cemetery nearby. Are you referring to his state plaque being at the cemetery or some sort of historical marker. I have contacts in the area and the next time in the area I could take a quick look if you aren’t local

  3. Prentiss Cupit says

The name is spelled CupiT, not D.
I know where the historical marker is if u are still interested. I was raised in Union Church. My first 10 or so years were about a mile from this church. Then we moved to the big city of Union Church.
Anyway, contact me if you want info on the historical landmark.
