Back in November 2019 a client asked me to find him a high end computer that he could use for his electrical engineering business. His requirements were powerful enough to run his design software packages  and run other programs all at the same time. Plus he wanted the option to use a touch screen, stylus, and option to use as a tablet would be nice. After some research I found the business class Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Series 2-in-1 – 5591.

Originally I wasn’t planning to review this computer but after using the computer for a couple of weeks and then getting the chance to use it again when the client needed some updates and software packages added to the computer I decided I needed to share my experience. Since I wasn’t planning to review the laptop I didn’t save the specs (I have access only when I have the clients computer) and my receipt from Dell doesn’t show the build the sheet. Also keep in mind, Dell doesn’t keep a computer around that long but the Inspiron 5000 series is still around and they have similar options. Below are the specs that for the computer I purchased for the client.

    • 10th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-10510U Processor (8MB Cache, up to 4.9 GHz

Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Series 2-in-1 - 5591

The Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Series 2-in-1 – 5591 is a powerful business class computer with touchscreen/style pen controls and the option to fold into a tablet. Its not a gaming computer and it doesn’t really work for image/video editing (on-board shared video card). For those power users that need a ton of processing power but do not need the high end video card, this is a great option.

As to testing, I didn’t get to involved with it since this was a client computer and not one of mine or one given to me to test for a review. For testing, I made sure I could stream movies, listen to music, surf the web as a tablet/computer, using the stylus, writing documents, and check the battery life. For the more advanced testing I spoke with the customer after a month of usage to see what his thoughts were on the computer.

Battery Life

For battery life I charged it to full then ran it down to about 20%, I was able to get about 3 hours of life and it took several hours to recharge. Plenty of time to use when working at a café, public library, or a fast food place. During the recharge process I charged it over night or it was charging while using the computer. This computer uses a standard wall charger and large ugly transformer. No charging options for USB-C. This computer needs to much power for USB-C to work. The client told me he was getting about 4 hours of usage without power saving mode.

Computer Usage

Sitting at a desk or at a table I found the standard laptop option works best. In this mode I did most of my office work. I typed up documents, wrote emails, and watched videos. Laptop mode, would be an ideal way to connect a USB-C hub and connect into an HDMI cable or use the HDMI Port  and connect to your TV for streaming movies. Running all the programs the client had me setup and streaming music at the same had no effect on the computer. No lagging. The fans did turn on and you can hear them. But they are not as bad as my Alienware m15 r2.  During the heavy processor usage the computer got warm, but once again not as hot as my Alienware computer.

My client told me that all of his engineering apps worked well and much better than his other personal computer and work computers. He prefers his new 2-in-1 computer over everything else including his new Mac Book Pro.

Tablet Mode

I found Tablet Mode most useful for surfing the internet from the sofa or using it while on the move. This would be a great option in a doctor’s office environment. Using the stylus worked great and I preferred it over the digital keyboard. The pen actually made it faster.

When using the keyboard as a built in stand it wasn’t very useful as a everyday feature. But using it as tablet and a no handed reader on table, maybe using it in the kitchen to read a recipe while cooking might be useful.

When I asked my client about tablet mode, he uses it mostly for surfing the internet in the recliner, an oversized kindle reader, and watching videos/movies while traveling. He really doesn’t use the keyboard as a stand.

Final Thoughts

Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Series 2-in-1 - 5591

I never thought I would find a 2-in-1 computer useful but once I got my hands on the Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Series 2-in-1 – 5591 I released that I having have touchscreen and tablet options does come in handy. This computer doesn’t work for my everyday needs but I do have a 2017 Dell Inspiron 13in Business Class computer I use when I travel for working on documents and do need a powerful computer. When that computer needs to be replaced I will look at getting a 13in version of this computer.

If you are in need of a powerful business computer that doesn’t need a high end graphics card and want the option of using tablet and touchscreen, I would look into the Dell Inspiration 2-in-1 1500 series. The best place to purchase is Dell. They will have the newest version of this computer with customization options.
