Over the last few years I found that lighting is a important part of photography. Even in landscape work, a flash can come in handy to light up shadows. I finally got around to purchasing a flash a few years ago and it works great but I also found that I needed additional light for my product photography, macro photography, urbex photography, and light painting photography at night. I’m still pretty new to photography and need to spend some time learning to properly use lighting for studio work. For now, I use the skills I learned working in a mobile portrait studio a few years ago. During that time we used commercial flash systems that took up a lot space in the car and took over an hour to setup. For my needs, that’s a lot of work and not very mobile. So I decided to invest in LED Light Panels for static light systems. I currently have four panels and over the next few weeks I plan on sharing my experiences with each one. Check out my review of the Boling  BL-P1 RGB Led Video Light.

Boling  BL-P1 RGB Led Video Light – The Review

Boling BL-P1 RGB Led Video Light

I do a lot light of product photography, macro work, and in pitch black room photography. I found that using a flash isn’t always ideal for lighting up subjects.  There are times that I prefer static lighting over flash photography and at other times I’ve found that flash photography isn’t always allowed but they allow static lighting.

During macro photography I found that using LED panels setup in a way that it blocks out back ground shadows along with my flash I am able to light things up better. Although I haven’t used much lighting when doing macro work, I believe using a static light would be a great option when working with live subjects (flashing lights can disturb wildlife).

I’m getting into light painting and exploring buildings that do not have power. The LED works in several ways. It can create enough light that I can focus on my subject and then be placed just right so that it lights up a dark room. If you have multiple LED panels you can set them throughout the space to light up different parts of the subject.

First Impressions

Boling BL-P1 RGB Led Video Light

The Boling BL-P1 RGB Led Video Light comes in a black box with stats on the side of the boox. The contents are secured and shouldn’t come loose. The contents include the manual, the panel, allen wrench, and a case. I like the case a lot. Its a narrow tactical style case. It has molle strapping on one side and can easily be attached to a bag with strapping. It even has a spot for the allen wrench.

Operational Use

I’m impressed with the Boling BL-P1 RGB Led Video Light. For the price you get a lot of light and features. First off it has a built-in battery that can stay lit for at least an hour and half at full power and at 50% I was able to get more than two hours of use. But cutting the brightness in half is useless for my needs. Charging time is close to 90 minutes. Sometimes it takes a little longer, sometimes it takes less time. Plus it holds a charge for weeks. So far I’ve only used for product photography and I burned up about 60 minutes battery during about an hour of unboxing photos and product photos for several products. I found that it does get warm.

I also see the potential use for this panel for road trip work where I need additional lighting over the day/night of shooting. All I have to do is plug this into a USB charger in the car and charge between locations or if runs out of juice on set plug it into a powerbank and charge it as my backup panel is in operation. When lighting up a room I carry several extra tripods and place them around the room or the subject to properly light it up.

During usage I found that a single panel is good for on camera work if you can figure out how to use the mount so it centers correctly on the subject. Video Bloggers will also find this one handy and with the RGB features the user can change the look and feel of the scene. As for product photography or lighting up a room. You will need more than one panel. Like with any other lighting setup you will need multiple lights to light a room, a subject, or multi person video work.

Final Thoughts

Boling BL-P1 RGB Led Video Light

As I mentioned before I’m impressed with the Boling  BL-P1 RGB Led Video Light and its features. Its not my main light but its just during the shoot for additional lighting from above or from the side to remove shadows. This is a great light for a great price. As of this review I recommend this light if you are in need of an inexpensive LED Light Panel. As time goes on I will update this review and my recommendations.
