I originally purchased these for my wife. I wasn’t comfortable having her wearing regular earbuds and over-the-ear headphones out in public. These types of headphones can limit a person’s self-awareness and I’d prefer to her to be able hear joggers or bikers passing her on the trail or someone that’s up to no good. But after using the AfterShokz OpenMovefor five minutes I realized these are perfect at keeping yourself awareness while out on the trail and I needed a pair of these for myself.

AfterShokz OpenMove – The Review

The AfterShokz OpenMove come in a nice retail packaging. Everything is protected and individually wrapped. Once opened, you will find the earphones, temple stickers (add a little flare to your earphones), foam ear plugs with plastic case, charging cable, and the USB-C cable.

First Impressions

AfterShokz OpenMove

On first impressions, these are made well and designed to last. They are flexible enough to stretch around most sized heads. However, it fits perfectly on my head (normal sized/shaped head) but on my wife the back part hangs out about an inch. It’s not a big deal for her and if you look at most of the pictures of the models, it’s the same thing for them. Because they hook over the ears like a standard pair of earphones and the flex, they stay in place and almost never move.

They have a matte rubber coating, and all the ports/buttons are covered with sealed rubber. The flap that covers the USB-C port is tight and the cable fits nicely when charging the earphones. The power/Bluetooth/+Volume button and the negative buttons are next to the charging port.

The multi-function button is on the left speaker up on the metal strip. You press that bottom you can play, pause, take calls, and go back a track.

The foam ear plugs are nice, and the little plastic case keep them clean. They work if properly inserted.

The soft case is nice, but you need a hard case if you plan to throw them in a gym bag or travel bag.

Using the AfterShokz OpenMove

I’ve worn the OpenMove headset around the house, during phone calls and in noisy environments. They work in most places. You have to crank up the sound when its loud around you. If you use foam earplugs you won’t have to turn up the sound that much and it helps blocking out the distracting noises.

The sound quality is ok and better than I thought. You have to keep in mind that sending the sound through your bones will soften the sound quality. The bass is just ok. Listening audio books and taking calls are better.  Most rock and country songs sound good. You just have that muted tone. Added the foam ear plugs help and proper placement of the speakers helps.  To me the safety features outweigh the sound quality.

Around the house my wife wears them every morning and whenever she works out.  She mostly listens to pod casts and audio books, but she likes them for both music and audio. She also uses them when out walking around and will use them on her next hiking adventure with friends.

Buttons work fine. But the multi-function doesn’t always work in the way I want it. I mostly control music from the phone and rarely use the controls on the headset.

Charing and Update Time

OpenMove Buttons and Charging Port

Charging the AfterShokz OpenMove is easy. Just plug them into the USB-C charging point and a few hours later they are ready to go. We get about 6 hours of play back when listening at 80% sound level. If you listen any higher it’s about 5 hours, I think. During my tests, I only went past 80% a few times. They are too loud for me.

Pairing Tests

They work great. They pair to my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 on the first try.  My wife was able to get to pair on the first time on her iPhone 12. We found that we couldn’t keep both phones paired to it. Even if the other phone isn’t around, we still have to unpair the other device from the headset before we can pair it to another phone.

Final Thoughts

AfterShokz OpenMove

The AfterShokz OpenMove is a great option for those that need self-awareness. They are not a good option for those what the perfect sound coming out of their headsets. For our needs, they are a perfect mix for those time when we are out hiking or walking around and need to hear what us is around. When we want better quality of music and use our earbuds and headphones. If you are look in for an entry into AfterShokz Bone Conduction Earphones, these are a good option.
