According to Texas Historical Association Manda, Texas was first settled in 1885 and by 1899 it their first telephone lines. By 1900 the population had reached 40. During the 1930s the population declined to around 20. In 1947 the surrounding communities consolidated their school districts, and the Manda Common School District was founded. By 1962 the school only 12 students.  In 1963 the school district was closed and the students were sent to surround school districts (population still 20).

Today all that’s left of the town is the old school house. Currently those that live in the area have maintained the school.

Manda School House

I haven’t found any information on the age of the Manda School House. It looks like it was built before the Manda Common School District was founded.

The school is an old two room school and may be the last still standing two room school house in Travis County, Texas. The school looks to be in good shape and the owner(s) have a done a great keeping this school from being torn down.

I plan to research the old school in the future and hopefully have enough information to write an article for Vanishing Texas. If you know anything about the school, what its being used for today, or old pictures of the school back when it was active, please contact me.

About the Image

Manda School House in Manda, Texas was shot by hand on a gloomy rainy day using my Sony a6000 and the Sony 16-50mm f3.5-5.6 OSS Power Zoom Lens. I then used Adobe Lightroom, and Google Nik Collection to remove noise and clean up the images.
