During our trip to the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge we stayed at an Airbnb about 30 minutes east in Comanche County, Oklahoma. During our trips out the refuge it has us passing through what looks like an old community at a crossroads on a rural stretch of highway. The only two buildings left in town is old grocery/general store and mechanic’s shop, a few houses, and the Midway Church down the road. There isn’t a town listed at these crossroads but the way its step it feels like it may have been at least small unincorporated town at one time that never made it on the maps.
General Store n in Comanche County, Oklahoma
The old general store in Comanche County, Oklahoma has been several names over the years and you can tell that by seeing the various lettering and signage on the building front. The most readable signs calls the store ER’s Store. Sitting in the tall weeds you will find a couple of old gas pumps. If you go back and look at photos on Google Maps the weeds are cut back and you can see the front of the store and the old pumps.
The next building over is an old concrete block and metal building that looks like it was an old mechanic’s shop.
According to the tax records the store is listed as a retail building with a detached office next door. The buildings are listed as being built in 1910 and in poor condition.
About the Images
The buildings were shot from the roadside on a bright sunny midafternoon. I using my Sony a6000 with my Sony SELP18105G E PZ 18-105mm F4 G OSS. I then edited the images with Adobe Lightroom CC, Topaz Labs Denoise AI; Topaz Labs Sharpen AI and DXO NIK Collection to clean up the images.
