A few years back I had some free time while in Mississippi and in the Vicksburg area I decided to visit the Vicksburg National Military Park. Over the years I had been there a few times but was never able to visit the entire park. During my last visit, I only had time to visit the Northern Side of the park. I stopped at every monument/statue and took pictures of the more impressive memorials. One of the more impressive stops along the way is the Minnesota State Memorial at Vicksburg National Military Park.

The Minnesota State Memorial  is a 90-foot vertical obelisk made of Mount Airy, NC, granite. It features a bronze statue of a woman representing the “Statue of Peace.” She has a sword and shield from the North and South armies who placed their weapons in her keeping.

The sculptor was William Couper and the memorial was built at the cost of $24,000. If it were made today the memorial would cost closer to million Dollars with inflation.
