Every time I visit family in Mississippi I try and plan trips to visit historic and interesting places with in an hour or two from my parent’s place. This trip was a little a different, I was there to visit my brother and his wife’s new baby. This little guy is their first child and that makes me his uncle. So whenever my brother was home from work and they were feeling up to having company we were over there visiting. Each day we were there I went out for about an hour from the house to explore a few points of interest. Below are some of the pictures from my Mississippi Road Trip. Once I create full articles and get the pictures edited, I will add links to those articles.

The Old Homochitto River Bridge Near McCall Creek, Mississippi

The Old Bridge Over the Homochitto River Near McCall Creek, Mississippi - Mississippi Road Trip

This old bridge was built in 1906 and spans the Homochitto River near the small town of McCall Creek, Mississippi. The bridge was difficult to shoot and sadly, sunset was boring. To get to the bridge isn’t easy. You have to park off the highway on the shoulder and hike through the deep woods or follow the river along the shore and hike the sandbar. If I have time during my next visit I plan to reshoot this and try a night shoot.

Cruisers and Coffee

Cruisers and Coffee - Toyota of Brookhaven

Early Saturday morning I hung out with my friend Mike (I met him last year at my brother’s wedding and was one of the groomsmen) at Toyota of Brookhaven. This little car show was for vintage Toyota Land Cruisers and other vintage Toyotas. During the event I met Nolan of Eat and See Mississippi

The Flooded Ghost Town of Rodney, Mississippi

The Flooded Ghost Town of Rodney, Mississippi

After Cruisers and Coffee Mike and I took a road trip in his old Land Cruiser down the ghost town of Rodney, Mississippi to see how bad the flooding is in person. Sadly its pretty bad and from what I was told its only going to get worse.

Piedmont Church in Jefferson County, Mississippi

The Piedmont Church - Hidden in the Woods

Then late Sunday Afternoon I made the hour trip out to the Piedmont Church. This old abandoned church sits deep in the woods. Not much information on this church. It is believed to be a family church for those living in the area at onetime. Records show the church property was deeded in Jefferson County in 1855. I have a local historian friend looking into it since I can’t do the local research.

Cupid Cemetery

The Cupid Cemetery - Hidden in the Woods

Across from the Piedmont Church about fifty feet in the woods sits a private cemetery. That cemetery is called the Cupid Cemetery. Many of the headstones have the sir name of Cupid on it and I was told that this church may have been built and used by this family over the years.

Red Bluff, Morgantown, Mississippi

Red Bluff, Mississippi is know as the Grand Canyon of Mississippi

While visiting with my brother, his wife, and the new baby, I mentioned that we were looking for an area close by to do some hiking that wasn’t to muddy. Most of the area where my family lives has seen a lot of rain over the last few months. Because of all the rain, it makes it difficult for us to hike miles of rough terrain in the mud. My sister-in-law mentioned Red Bluff and explained it as being called the Grand Canyon of Mississippi. She said there are ton official hiking trails around the bluff.

Abandoned Train Wreck Along the Pearl River – Mississippi

The Old Train Wreck Along the Pearl River in Mississippi

Once you get to the bottom of the hiking trail at Red Bluff you can follow the active train tracks for about a quarter of a mile. Along the Pearl River you will find the remains of an old train wreck. All that’s left are a few rail cars. If you decide to find the wreck be careful. This is track is in operation. You might find a train in your path!

Exploring the Creek at Red Bluff

Exploring the Creek at Red Bluff, Mississippi

After exploring the old train wreck we decided to explore the creek and see if get a view of the bottom of Red Bluff. Sadly we couldn’t make it to the end of the creek. The creek bed was full of debris. After our hike back to the top of the bluff we spoke with a local couple who told me that if we crawled around the debris we could have gotten to bluff bottom. During our next visit we will explore the Red Bluff again.

Old Red Brick Church in Red Lick, Mississippi

The Red Lick Baptist Chrch was built in 1855

As were heading out of town for our trip back to Texas, we made a quick stop at the Old Red Brick Church in Red Lick, Mississippi. This old church is a Baptist Church but was originally a Preysberian Church. I needed another picture of the Church and cemetery. I didn’t get a chance to explore cemeteries on the property but I got another great shot of the church to add to my original article.

Hidden Cemetery in the Woods

A Little Hidden Cemetery Hidden in the Woods in Desperate Need of Repairs

My local historian friend told me about a little known cemetery hidden the woods. She said that the cemetery is pretty much forgotten and in need of repairs. I walked through the cemetery and found many of the gravesites were spread out and there may be more gravesites with missing headstones.

Hermanville United Methodist Church

Little old church in Hermanville, Mississippi

On our trip back to Blue Ridge, Texas we stopped in Port Gibson, Mississippi to check out the Port Gibson Historic Society.  Then on to Hermanville, Mississippi to visit an abandoned church that is about to fall in on its self. But the road to the old church is now a private road and blocked with no trespassing signs. So we went over to the Hermanville United Methodist Church. Its an active church but still beautiful old church to photography.
