During one of my Mississippi Back Roads road trips out to photograph the old Piedmont Church in Jefferson County, Mississippi I came across the old Piedmont Baptist Church Cemetery hidden in the woods. I was told by Jefferson County historian contact told me that the cemetery is locally called the old Cupit Cemetery in Jefferson County.
Cupit Cemetery in Jefferson County, Mississippi
The records show the cemetery is called the Piedmont Baptist Church Cemetery but locally its the Cupit Cemetery in Jefferson County, Mississippi. The oldest gravestone is for John Hart who was born in 1825 and passed away in 1879. The second oldest is Isaiah Hart who was born in 1802 and passed away in 1887. The majority of the gravesites have death dates that range from early 1900s through early 1930s. With a few deaths in the 40s, 50s, 1970s, and 1980s. The newest gravesite is Richard “Sonny Boy’’ Cupit who was born in 1931 and passed away in 1994.
The Cupit Cemetery is mostly a private cemetery for the cupit family and those that married into the family. There are about 30 people buried at this cemetery with a large number of children buried there from the late 1800s through the early 1900s. For more information about those that are laid to rest here please visit Find a Grave.
From what my local historian contact found, she believes the cupit family may have moved out of the area or married and their last name changed. She found only a handful of cupids still in the area.
