Back in late January 2018 my wife did a mini road trip exploring the back roads from Union Church to Rodney, Mississippi. We stopped at several active churches and many rural abandoned rural churches. One our stops was the Travelers Rest Church in Lorman, Mississippi.
Travelers Rest Church in Lorman, Mississippi – History
When I first saw pictures of the old church on various Mississippi abandoned and historical Facebook Groups I had thought the church was abandoned along with many other people. The church needs a little work but someone is taking care of the place.
Over the last year I’ve done some research on the place and have come up with nothing about the churches history. The Travelers Rest Church in Lorman, Mississippi is another small rural church that is so small it history will be lost to time. My local contact who has done a lot of church research in Jefferson County, Mississippi and knows a lot of the churches near Rodney doesn’t know much either.
One of the Mississippi Groups mentions that the original church building is farther back in the woods. From what I can tell from the maps it doesn’t exist anymore. This current church building is considered more modern than many of the churches in the area. But once again, the building built isn’t listed.
One person said at one time this church may have been an inn for those traveling the Natchez Trace. It was once called Gilliam’s Travels Rest Baptist Church.
Another person found references that this church may have been used as a retreat from those living in Port Gibson.
When I stopped by and photographed the church, I happened to look through the front windows and saw that the church still has its furniture and other church related items. From researching other small rural churches, this may be one of those churches that meets, once a month or several times a year for services or reunions.

Traveler Rest Church in Lorman, Mississippi was shot mid afternoon by hand with my Sony a6000 and the Sony 16-50mm f3.5-5.6 OSS Power Zoom Lens. I then used Adobe Lightroom, and Google Nik Collection to remove noise and clean up the images.
Mr Johnston have you been able to fine when Travelers Rest Church was built in Lorman MS.
No haven’t found any information on the old church. I know someone maintains the property because its cut with a mower (I’ve driven by several times in the spring and summer) or at least a neighbor comes by and cuts several times a year.
Do you have any infomration or me to add? Are you looking for more info as well. I do have a few contacts that have historical knowledge about the area.
