During one of my trips to the Port Gibson, Mississippi area I decided to explore the remains of the Grand Gulf township. Grand Gulf is another small Mississippi River port town that time was kind to. As I came into town the commercial building left was an abandoned store. Today’s article is about the old general store in Grand Gulf, Mississippi.
The Old General Store in Grand Gulf, Mississippi
The old general store in Grand Gulf, Mississippi is the only commercial building (there is an abandoned church is nearby) left in town and its been abandoned for years. The roads still show the city’s old layout. The few residents left lift in town live trailers either lifted off the ground to avoid floods or live in travel trailers, and there are a few modern houses on high ground (but I need to spend a little more time seeing what’s out there).
I couldn’t find any historical information on the building. But the little information I did find was that the store was operated by a woman and the building was built sometime after the decline of the population (built after the Civil war). The building and surrounding property is now property of the Grand Gulf Military State Park per someone mentioned in one the Mississippi Facebook historical group.
I plan to revisit the area and the park later this year. When I’m there I will ask around to see if there’s any information the locals know or at the park. As always, if you know more about this old store or anyone I can contact to learn more.
About the Images
The image was shot by hand on a cloudy day but the Sun did pop out as I took pictures of the building. I used my Sony a6000 and a Sony SEL16F28 16mm f/2.8 lens for this shot. I then edited the image in Adobe Lightroom CC. I used Topaz Labs A.I. Clear and DXO NIK Collection to clean up the image, remove noise, and recover the lost details.
