Abandoned Gymnasium in Texas Hill Country

In September 2017 I took a road trip with a couple other photographers through some of the central and northern parts of Texas Hill Country. One of our stops was small rural town with a population of around 100 (according to the 2000 census). The town’s school served the community for over a 113 years! Sadly the school closed down in 1989 and the site was eventually purchased by a nonprofit religious organization before it was abandoned.

What’s interesting about this location is that the original school still stands on the property (part of looks like it was converted into a garage or warehouse) the second school, a brick two story building in poor condition, large one story building probably built in the 50s, a full single court basket gym, and small house where the headmaster may have lived.

There isn’t much information on the school online and at some point I will start researching the school’s history and I can’t tell you when the gym was built but was in decent shape when we visited. But I was told by the neighbors that watch over the property that they have been catching local kids using the gym to ride the 4 wheelers on the hard wood floors. The roof has several holes in it. Sadly the gym and the two storey building won’t be around much longer.

Abandoned Gymnasium in Texas Hill Country – About the Image

The image was shot by hand on a bright sunny day using my Sony a6000 and a Sony SEL16F28 16mm f/2.8 lens. I then edited the image in Adobe Lightroom CC.
