This week’s random image is of the old Calaboose in Leonard, Texas. This small 117-square-foot jail would have sat on the edge of town. Today it sits a few blocks from the town square and close to the middle of town.
What is a Calaboose?
Calaboose (just a small jail) are part of our history and at one time they were part of most small communities or shared by several neighboring communities. One of my goals over at VanishingTexas.net is to preserve Texas history and the old Calabooses are in danger of being torn down. Many small and large towns have already removed them because they were at one time not worth saving. Today some cities are trying to save, preserve, moved to a “better” location, or even recreate them for their historical parks.
The Old Calaboose in Leonard, Texas
According to one site, the calaboose in Leonard, Texas was built in 1919 to replace the old wooden one that was in need of repairs or replacement. Another website says the old wooden jail was moved offsite and lost track of. I bet it’s long gone since it has been over 100 years since it was moved. There are several small cells and in 1930 the jail was renovated. A toilet was added. I have several other pictures of the interior and will go into more detail on Vanishing Texas at some point.
