This week’s random image is from our Texas Panhandle trip we took back in July 2022. The trip was a lot of fun, we were able to catch up with old friends, and I could visit a few abandoned places that have been on my list for a few years. I named this image Star Gazing in the Texas Panhandle.

My wife and several of her high school friends decided to celebrate their 40th birthday at Dove’s Rest Cabins and spend our days exploring Palo Duro Canyon State Park and the surrounding area. The ladies decided to bring their families since we are all friends and we hadn’t seen each other in a few years.

We ended up staying in Rustlers Draw Cabin with one of our friend’s family. It’s a nice cabin that can sleep up to 4 couples and there’s a sleeper sofa for a couple more people. The cabin is fully stocked with the staples needed to cook/eat your meals in the cabin and then get out to the canyon. I plan on writing up a short review of our stay at some point so I won’t go into details today.

Palo Duro Canyon is a great place for star gazing and night photography. It’s considered a dark skies area. There’s very little light pollution from the nearby towns. Because of this, I decided to take some night shots and do some star gazing. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a good spot and with our busy daily schedule, I couldn’t stay up or travel to an area with a better view. So I decided to shoot our cabin. I couldn’t turn off the porch lights because our cabin mates were using the porch.

About the Image

The picture was taken about 11 pm under clear skies. I used my Sony a6000 and my Sony SELP18105G E PZ 18-105mm F4 G OSS lens. The image was then edited with Adobe Lightroom CC, Topaz Labs Denoise AI and Topaz Labs Sharpen AIAurora HDR, and Luminar AI to clean up the image.
