This week’s random image is from a West Texas rural exploration trip I took with a friend back in 2015. One of our stops was to an Old and Soggy Abandoned West Texas School. Sadly we were late to the party and much of the building was in severe decay.

Old and Soggy Abandoned West Texas School

There isn’t much information on the old school or the town. What information I did find was the school was an old elementary school and was built in the 1930s. In 1948 the local high school was consolidated and moved to a neighboring town. There is no mention of when the school was closed but I image with the population dropping to less than 100 by the 1970s and then to around 25 in 2000 the school was closed in the 1970s.

As you can see from the image, the school is in bad shape. Its one of the worse places I’ve documented in the last 5 years. Most of the floors were gone and I had to walk in the dark on the support beams. By now with the roof leaking from everywhere it must of caved in.

About the Image

The image was shot with an old Nikon D5000 and Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR during a warm rainy dark afternoon afternoon during a severe storm. Sadly many of the images from this shoot didn’t come out. I then edited the images with Adobe Lightroom CC and Topaz Labs Denoise AI and Topaz Labs Sharpen AI and DXO NIK Collection to clean up the image, remove noise, and recover the lost details.
