The Old Hutson Hunter's Supply Store in Spanish Fort, Texas

Spanish Fort, Texas is an old cowboy town that sits on or near the Chisholm Trail and was a stop for the cowboys to stock up on supplies and other goods. The town is also where Justin Boots and a few other boot makers got their start. Today, by most visitors, its considered a ghost town, but it really isn’t a ghost town. Its still an active community but its lost its post office, businesses, and the school district was combined with another nearby district.

The Old Hutson Hunter’s Supply Store is one of two remaining commercial buildings left in town. Both buildings sit on what’s left of downtown. One building looks to be an old service station and the other is Hutson Hunter’s Supply Store. Both buildings are vacant.

My first visit to Spanish Fort the Hunter’s Store was in 2014 and it was abandoned and bad shape. It full of trash and the remains of the store. There was even an old pool table or some sort of gaming table one side of the building and the store counter on the other.

When I came through town back in 2017 the building’s exterior had been cleaned up and repaired. Looking through the windows I found the owners had made some renovations to the interior. It was cleaned out and the floors look ready to be prepped for a refinish.

As to the history I can’t find any info online. I have heard through several sources that the store was the go to place for hunting and outdoor supplies. Hunting groups would stop here and outfit their hunts with gear from the store.

About the Image

The Old Hutson Hunter’s Supply Store in Spanish Fort, Texas was shot on a cloudy sunny afternoon in August using my Sony a6000 Camera and with a Sony SEL16F28 16mm f/2.8 lens.  I then edited the image with Adobe Lightroom CC and Topaz Labs A.I. Clear and DXO NIK Collection to clean up the image, remove noise, and recover the lost details.

  1. Kathleen Hutson says

My husband is the grandson of Virgil & Mary Hutson who owned and operated Hutson Hunter Supply Store. He visited his grandparents many times through the 50+ years they lived there. In fact he carved his initials in the concrete porch one summer when he was a kid. The family has many fond memories of this place.
