Prior to 1845 schools and churches conducted business in private homes. After 1845 the Masonic Grand Lodge of Texas set aside provisions to aid local lodges in erecting educational buildings. In 1893 a Masonic building for fraternal, educational and spiritual purposes was built. During the week the first floor served as a one class room school and was church on Sundays. The School did not have electricity and plumbing until 1945. Out houses were used plumbing was added.

In addition to the lower portions of the building being used for the school and church services, the lower area was used as a social center of the community, hosting reunions, wedding receptions and other group activities.

During the 1920s churches services ceased and in 1944 the school closed. The building was used for regular events until 1968 when the building wasn’t used that much. The Illinois Community Homecoming was held there every year and continues to use it now. In 1987 the Illinois Bend Community Club renovated the building.

About the Image

The Illinois Bend School in Illinois Bend, Texas was shot on a cloudy sunny afternoon in August using my Sony a6000 Camera and with a Sony SEL16F28 16mm f/2.8 lens.  I then edited the image with Adobe Lightroom CC and Topaz Labs A.I. Clear and DXO NIK Collection to clean up the image, remove noise, and recover the lost details.
