This week’s random him of the week is a picture of the old Progress Grocery H. Heffler Proprietor in Tyler, Texas. I took this picture back in 2022 and have visited several times in the last few years and plan to visit again the next time I’m in the area. There are few more shots I want to get of the building. At some point I will share the short walk around I created with my gimbal action camera.

Progress Grocery H. Heffler Proprietor – Quick History

The Old Progress Grocery was built and operated by Henry Heffler until he was murdered in his store in 1922. The Robber was referred to a highwayman who was eventually convicted of the murder. I found the store’s history somewhere, but I can’t find it for some reason now that I’m looking for it again. At some point, I will share some more images and its history over at Vanishing Texas. (Make sure to check out my Texas-related articles many of them link over to that site.)

Current status

The store is in good shape and not technically abandoned. The owners have done a great job at restoring the building and it’s currently up for sale (as of 2 years ago). The store sign is painted on the front and side of the building, and it listed as 1909 The First Progress Grocery H. Heffler Proprietor.

About the Image

This shot was taken with my Sony a6000. It was post-edited in Adobe Lightroom CC, Topaz Labs Denoise AI, Topaz Labs Sharpen AI, and Aurora HDR (no longer available but still a great product) to clean up the image. You can create the same effects from Aurora HDR with Luminiar Neo (partner discount codes: JJOHNSTPHOTOG10 – 10% off or JJOHNSTPHOTOG – $10 off) and edit your images.
