I was going through some of my old images from last year and realized I never shared one of my road trips. Back in October I made a back-to-back road trip I shared the West Texas Road Trip one but I never shared the East Texas one. For that trip I decided to keep it short and take the route drivers would have taken before HWY 82 was built. I call that road trip October 2021 Road Trip: HWY 56 Sherman to Paris, Texas
October 2021 Road Trip: HWY 56 Sherman to Paris, Texas
The Day before I had gotten back from a long one-day road trip out to West Texas. So for this trip I wanted to keep the trip short but visit an area that I hadn’t been to in a while. So I decided to drive HWY 56 from Sherman to Paris. This old highway was the original route for travelers from Paris to Sherman and further west. Along this route, you can see some of the few remaining communities and their old service stations and row buildings.
Old Service Station and Grocery Store Between Sherman and Bells, Texas
Although there are a ton of great stops in Sherman, I decided to skip all that and just visit the rural stops. My first stop was this old building. It looks like it may have been an old service station and Grocery Store.
Dominos in Savoy, Texas
I love old Row Buildings. Many of these old buildings are disappearing. Either from neglect or by progress. Every time I pass by this old building I wonder about its story.
Old Renovated Service Station Savoy, Texas
This old building was recently renovated. In the past, it looks like it may have been a sort of service station. When I last saw it was being used for private use or it was a vacant building being maintained.
Grain Elevator and Silos East of Windom, Texas
Just east of Windom sits a large farming outfit. Siting along the railroad tracks is a large grain elevator and Silos setup. It’s all modern and looks to be still in use. It’s a favorite site along this road for me and it can be seen for miles. I’m not sure who it belongs to.
Brown’s Feed and Grain Store
The old feed and grain store was in operation for decades. But with the opening of HWY 82, put a lot of businesses along 56 out of business. Brown’s closed its doors around 10 to 15 years ago according to a local contact. I also spent some time photographing a few of the buildings downtown.
Texas’s Eiffel Tower
My final stop was the Texas Eiffel Tower. The tower is a smaller scale tower with a big red Stetson Hat (Cowboy Hat) on the top. I wasn’t able to get better pictures because several groups were hanging out at the tower during that visit.
Red River Valley Veterans Memorial Museum
Sitting next door is the veteran’s memorial museum was built to honor all veterans. Through all US conflicts. When I was there it was mostly complete but there still adding more features. If you are in the area, it’s worth a visit.
About the Images
The images were shot on a gloomy and wet afternoon. I used my Sony a6000 and my Sony SELP18105G E PZ 18-105mm F4 G OSS lens. The image was then edited with Adobe Lightroom CC, Topaz Labs Denoise AI and Topaz Labs Sharpen AI, Aurora HDR, and Luminar AI to clean up the image.
The Dominoes picture was taken on a sunny afternoon with my cellphone about a year before. During my October trip several cars were parked in front of the buildings and I couldn’t get a good shot.
