On a recent trip to Mississippi I decided that my return trip would once again take through Keachi, Louisiana to visit the old Longstreet Rosenwald School, Keachi Cemetery, and the Confederate Memorial Cemetery. My first stop was the School in Longstreet Louisiana.
Longstreet Rosenwald School
Just down the road in the small community of Longstreet sits the Longstreet Rosenwald School Community Center. Before it was a community center it was a Rosenwald School that educated African American children from first to eighth grade.
The Longstreet school was built in 1920 and is one of the last of 500 schools in Louisiana built from 1912 to 1932 using the Julius Rosenwald Fund. Many of these old schools were bricked over, replaced, abandoned, or demolished. This school was renovated/restored recently and was converted into a community center. As to the design, the school was designed by architecture students at the Tuskegee Institute.
I wasn’t able to see the interior this visit, but from what I can tell, when you walk through the front doors, you will enter into a kitchen area or a utility area with sinks and as you pass through that area you will have the option to enter either classroom. At some point I hope to get some interior pictures.
About the Images
The Images were shot on a mostly clear late afternoon, just after sunset using my Sony a6000 and my Sony SELP18105G E PZ 18-105mm F4 G OSS lens and a mono pod. The image was then edited with Adobe Lightroom CC and Topaz Labs A.I. Clear and Topaz Labs Denoise AI and Topaz Labs Sharpen AI and DXO NIK Collection
I would like to visit the Longstreet Rosenwald School, preferably in September 2021. We are working to create a Julius Rosenwald & Rosenwald Schools National Historical Park. Do you know anyone I can contact associated with the school, now used as a community center? Louisiana recommended the school for possible inclusion in the planned park. Thank you
