The Keachi Baptist Church is a transitional late Greek Revival – Gothic Revival frame structure located in Keachi, Louisiana with only a few changes to the original structure. Those changes were to the interior and does not change that much from the original look of the church.

Keachi Baptist Church – History and Features

 Keachi Baptist Church

In 1852 land was donated for a house of worship. But the architectural evidence shows the church building may have been built between 1875 and 1890. The historical nomination has the church being built in 1880.

The architectural evidence that comes into question is some of the moldings in church should not be found in a mid-ninetieth century church and the plate glass weight-hung windows (according the National Register of Historical Application). There is not a record of when the these changes were made and no evidence of a remodel. But locals have mentioned stories that before their time there was a severe storm that caused major damage to the church. I believe that the storm may have been about the time the church was officially to have been built since the changes made would have been what you might find around the late nineteenth century.

Exterior

“The building consists of a large gabled hall with a small projecting gabled entrance vestibule. Both have a full entablature, corner pilasters with molded capitals, and gable end returns. The rear also features gable end returns and corner pilasters with molded capitals. Openings take the form of two center lancet arches, including the louvered vents in the steeple. The steeple, with its entablature, pilasters, and end returns, echoes the styling of the rest of the church. The front doors feature heavy, intricate bolection moldings reminiscent of the Italianate style.” – National Register of Historical Places Registration Form

Interior

The interior is of a simple design that has flushboard walls and ceilings. The doors and windows have molded surrounds. The auditorium seating is believed to be salvaged from Keachi Female College that was originally located across the street.

Alterations

Overall the Keachi Baptist Church has survived with very little alterations. According to the records in the mid-twentieth century a small area behind the alter was walled off to create two small room on either side of the vestibule. The changes were made using like materials and has not changed the original character of the church. These alternations are not visible from the exterior.

About the Images

 Keachi Baptist Church

The front of the Keachi Baptist Church images were shot on gloomy day and the rest of the images were shot on a sunny day. The interior shot was shot through one of the windows using my Sony a6000 and my Sony SELP18105G E PZ 18-105mm F4 G OSS with a Gobe UV Filter using a monopod. I then edited the images with Adobe Lightroom CC and Topaz Labs Denoise AI and Topaz Labs Sharpen AI and DXO NIK Collection to clean up the images, remove noise, and recover the lost details.
