On a lonely stretch of backroads near Hazlehurst sits an abandoned Service Station that’s been boarded up for years. The pumps and the name of the store have been removed. The only evidence that it was an old country store or service station is the old Coca-Cola Sign above the boarded-up front doors.
Abandoned Service Station – Hazlehurst, Mississippi
I’ve driven by this old service station a few times over the years and slowly watched the decay getting worse. Each time I see the store I have to wonder about its history and realize that in its day, this was a great location for those needing gas on this lonely stretch of road. Back when this store was popular there probably wasn’t another store for miles. As time went on, vehicles became more reliable, roads were paved and bigger and better gas stations were added further out making the store close for good.
All that’s left of this old mom-and-pop gas station is the building and once that’s gone, only a faded memory that fades away as the older generations pass away.
About the Images
I left to take pictures of the service station about thirty minutes before a severe storm was about to start. I had hoped to catch the large storm clouds in the background. Unfortunately, the heavens opened up and dumped heavy rains so heavy that I had to shoot from the driver’s seat I had difficulties getting the camera to focus. I will have to revisit this location and get more pictures.
I used my Sony a6000 and my Sony SELP18105G E PZ 18-105mm F4 G OSS lens. The images were then edited with Adobe Lightroom CC, Topaz Labs Denoise AI and Topaz Labs Sharpen AI, Aurora HDR (no longer available but still a great product), and Luminiar Neo to clean up the images.
