For the last few years my wife and I always try and see the fireworks show in Blue Ridge, Texas. But this year my wife and I were in Canada during the 4th of July Weekend. Fortunately, Canada Independence Day happened the first day of our trip. So this year my brother-in-law and I decided to go up to the top a mountain an shoot the fireworks. Today’s article is the 2019 Canada Day Fireworks from the Top of Dilworth Mountain, Kelowna, B.C.

I love shooting fireworks and I finally figured out how to take decent pictures of them and I even had my church use some of my pictures in this years promo for their 9th Annual John Goines Memorial Freedom Celebration.

Normally I shoot the fireworks from around 200 feet from the launch site, but this year, since I was visiting another country and not familiar with the area I wasn’t interested in going downtown to see the show. So my brother-in-law and I decided to try shooting the fireworks from a few miles away and from the top of a mountain.

Dilworth Mountain was perfect for viewing the fireworks, but not the greatest for shooting fireworks. You need a long lens for this. Since I just got a new high end lens I wanted to test its capabilities shooting fireworks. The lens was just a little short on distance. But the pictures did come out and did a good job at shooting Kelowna skyline at night.

About  the Images

I shot the images with my Sony a6000 using my Sony SELP18105G E PZ 18-105mm F4 G OSS with a SunPak TravelLite Tripod. Using both the lens and the tripods were first time uses and I had some issues with tripod mount sinking or the fireworks shifting enough I needed to adjust the camera. Not being familiar enough with the settings, I couldn’t always get the camera adjusted. So several of the pictures are close to the edge of the picture. The images were then edited with Adobe Lightroom CC and Topaz Labs A.I. Clear and DXO NIK Collection to clean up the image, remove noise, and recover the lost details.
