One of the areas of Mississippi that I’ve wanted to visit for several years is the area around Fort Adams and the small historical church that now sits empty and damaged by flooding over the years. Last summer I decided to take a road trip down to Fort Adams to explore the area and hit up the hiking trails in the area. Sadly the trails were closed due to storm and flood damage from earlier in the year. Due to the amount of deep sand covered roads I couldn’t get to far into the road. I was able to photograph St. Patricks Catholic Church in Fort Adams, Mississippi and few other buildings.

St. Patricks Catholic Church in Fort Adams, Mississippi – History

After several hours of online research I found only a few things about the old church and possibly a couple of old books that might reference the church as they talk about the town. I was surprised this 120 year church (or at least the building was built 1900) isn’t listed  with the Mississippi Landmarks or the NRHP. Which is surprising. According to the research completed by Mississippi Obscura the town has been around for 220+ years and the area had a community for years before this.

If you know more please share your history, if you have a local contact or someone I can reach out to about the church please contact me.

Even from the distance, you can smell the mold and rot coming from the building across the street. But when I get close to the church I could smell the mold. I didn’t want to get to close the area was overgrown, muddy around the church, and the smell.

The church is boarded up to protect the stain glass windows. The boards don’t go all way up. You can just make the top of the glass. It almost looks like painted glass. Along the bottom of the outer walls you can see the stains from previous flooding.

Is St. Patricks Catholic Church in Fort Adams, Mississippi abandoned? I don’t think so. Someone is taking care of the place. The sign on the wall is newish and still shows service hours. But I doubt they held service there in a while. Between the recent flooding and places of worship closed due to Covid-19 its not being used.

I do plan to make another trip to explore the hiking trails in the area and when I do plan on exploring the town a little more if it isn’t under water and Covid-19 isn’t an issue.

James thanks for visiting St Patrick’s in Fort Adams. The Catholic Church gave the church to a group of parisoners several years ago due to the repeative flooding. We have been working to get the chruch relocated next to St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Woodville, Ms.
