I carry a backpacking trowel whenever I carry a pack while hiking. It doesn’t matter if the trail is only a few miles long (I’m unfamiliar with the trail) or it’s a day hike, it is secured in the bottom of my bag wrapped up in a small trash bag, and wipes. You never know when you might need it. If you aren’t carrying a backpacking trowel like the Naceture Ultralight Backpacking Trowel and are interested and getting one for yourself, check out my real-life experiences with the trowel.

Naceture Ultralight Backpacking Trowel

I carried a cheap heavy folding style from a big box store for a few years. But the weight does add up and I’m always looking for ways to lighten my gear. With backpacking and day hiking everyone matters. When I saw this multi-function Naceture Ultralight Backpacking Trowel I knew it was time for an upgrade.

Naceture Ultralight Backpacking Trowel – First Impressions

Ultralight Backpacking Trowel

It comes in just a plastic bag. No instructions or even how to care of it. Then again it’s aluminum and all you need to do is wipe it down after each use and disinfect if it gets nasty. After your hiking trip clean under the faucet with some dish soap. Dry it off and once it’s completely dry store it in your gear bag or on a storage shelf.

On first impressions, it’s a featherweight. It feels good in my hands. The saw teeth and digging edges could be sharper. The only thing missing is the notching in the handle-to-loop tent tie-downs. But I have a multitool that has that on it.

What I don’t like, it might bend in hard-packed soil or rocky dirt. The saw teeth look about worthless. I haven’t tried it yet but it looks like it might cut through some roots. I do have a multi-tool I carry that has a small saw blade and I will probably use that if I need to cut roots away.

Naceture Ultralight Backpacking Trowel – Test Dig

Digging holes with the Naceture Ultralight Backpacking Trowel

I dug some holes in the yard in a new flowerbed and even used them to pot up some new plants. It works great in that loose soil. In the clay parts of the yard, not so much. The handle isn’t that great for compact soil. It will take some getting used to. Plus the handle isn’t designed for a lot of digging. If you have gloves You can feel the impact every time you have to forcibly jab the trowel in the packed soil.

I love the bright orange color that no one will see. But it is easy to find if I drop it in dense foliage or grab it out of my bag at night. This guy is replacing my heavy one. I will use it until I can find a better option.

If you need a lightweight backing trowel that doesn’t cost much, the Naceture Ultralight Backpacking Trowel will get the job done.
