Aukey Key Series B80 Wireless Earbuds – The Review

Recently I joined Aukey’s Team TECHKEY program and as a team member of the program they send me free or discounted products to review so they can learn more about how users use/like their products. All they ask of the reviewer is  to provide a fair and unbiased review of their products and share that review across their social media networks. On Saturday March 2nd, 2019 Aukey sent their latest sport wireless ear buds to test. That new product is the Aukey Key Series B80 Wireless Earbuds. Below is my fair and unbiased review.

First Impressions – Unboxing and Product Look and Feel

Aukey Key Series B80 Wireless Earbuds

The Aukey Key Series B80 Wireless Earbuds comes in a nice almost square box. The cardboard is thick and high quality in red. It just has the picture of the ear buds and a few logos. The top of the box comes off to reveal another piece of red cardboard that covers the nicely displayed contents. Once you remove the cardboard you will see the contents displayed in an appealing layout. It has a simple but elegant look to it. Below the contents tray you will find the USB-C cable and the paperwork.

The Testing Process

AUKEY Key Series B80 Earbuds

I did most of my testing on my Samsung Note 8. My testing includes testing the charge time, how long the charge lasts (with a 80% sound volume and 100% volume), talking on the phone, listening to music of various genres, listening audio books/pod casts, listening to audio in quiet/loud environments, wearing the ear buds while walking/gym, (watching video to check lag) and check connectivity inside and outside.

Testing Connectivity

Connecting the Aukey Key Series B80 Wireless Earbuds to my Samsung Note 8 was easy. It connected on the first try. I found the headphones to be partially charged.

I then turned on Spotify and listened to a mixture, of rap, metal, rock, country, and Ska/Swing music. During this first test I found no lag (so far) but the connectivity was weak. I kept the phone in my back pocket and it cracked a lot. I moved to my front pocket and it was slightly better. When the phone was sitting on my desk it worked well. I could walk to the next room and it was ok but if I walked more than 20 feet away it wasn’t so good. So I decided this had to be related to low battery status on my phone (less than 15% and the charge on the earbuds were low). I charged the earbuds over night. The next day I listened to them for a few hours and left them on standby (still connected) for about 6 hours and recharged.

2nd Test Day

I listened to my random play list that covers most of the popular genres for almost four hours straight as I ran errands and then as worked around the house. When I finished up for the day, I left the music running and got about 6 hours of run time left according to BatBot with 40% of battery left.

3rd Test Day

I worked out at the gym for over an hour. I did a short work out on the tread mill and then worked upper body the rest of the day. The Aukey Key Series B80 Wireless Earbuds worked well. They didn’t fall out. I spent about 15 minutes in the sauna and got all sweaty. The ear buds continued to work. I did notice that the ear pads that came installed from the factory may be a little large. I found they weren’t fully seated in my ear canal. If I pushed the ear buds all the way in I could turn the music down and still block most of the outside noise including the gym music. Plus I was finally getting some bass. So my next step is to try out the different size ear pads and see what works the best.

4th Test Day

Aukey Key Series B80 Wireless Earbuds - Ear Pads

I ended up changing out the ear pads. I found that the ear pads on display are a rubber material and not the nice soft foam material that comes installed. I did find two more sets of ear pads hidden in the storage pouch. These ear pads are of the foam material. There’s a smaller set and a replacement pair for the installed. I ended up using the smaller pads. I wore them all day and found they are more comfortable if put completely in the ear. The music sounds a lot better and there’s a lot more bass. But, they are a little on the small side. They sometimes worked themselves out if I was moving my head around. Even when they work their way out its not all the way out. I still got better sound.

5th Test Day

On my final day of testing I went back to the gym with new ear pads in place and worked for over an hour and spent about 10 minutes in sauna. Once again the Aukey Key Series B80 Wireless Earbuds worked well. They stayed in place and I could not hear the conversations or the gym music. With the ear buds in their proper place I found found the music to be good. Still not enough bass.

Talking on the Phone

Over the last couple of days I’ve had the ear buds in place during calls in noisy places and in quiet places. I had no complaints from those on the other end of the call. However I did have one person say there was a couple times the call got scratchy. But that was because the mic rubbed against my beard.

AUKEY Key Series B80 Earbuds - Controls

On my side of the calls, they were fine. I could hear everyone, I just needed the sound all the way up. The controls worked well as well. I found I used my phone to start/end calls and control music since I’m so use to doing that.

Listening to Audio Books

Listing to audio books while using the Aukey Key Series B80 Wireless Earbuds sounded good but, I couldn’t get the sound loud enough and I sometimes had to rewind if the outside noise was to loud. Not the greatest option while in a gym but great for everyday uses.

Battery Life

Aukey Key Series B80 Wireless Earbuds

The ear bud’s battery is good enough to get you through 5 or 6 days of 1 hour workouts. I found that at 80% usage I used 60% of battery in about 7 hours.  It only took a little over an hour to charge it.

The Fit

Aukey Key Series B80 Wireless Earbuds - The Fit While Wearing Sunglasses

As to the fit, they fit great. I was a bit concerned with the way the ear buds go be behind the ear and over it before going into your ears but, I found these to be comfortable wearing them for long periods of time. Wearing sunglasses didn’t effect the way you wear them. As you can see from my test pictures my Oakleys sat on top of them. I wore my glasses for hours and didn’t feel them pressing on the ear buds.

Connectivity

Connecting to my phone works great. Always connects on the first try. My only issue is that connection has issues when the device was in my back pocket and I leaned over or I left the phone in another room. I don’t have this issue with other Bluetooth 4.0 and 5.0 devices. Its only with this one device. Its not every day and I can’t figure out what causes this.

Tips For Successful Usage

  1. Make sure your ear bud are pushed completely into the ear canal. Your sound quality will increase with more bass.
  2. If the ear buds hurt your ears switch to a better fit.
  3. Make sure the USB-C is pushed all the way into the port, might hear a click. If its not seated it won’t  charge
  4. Discard the case and get a larger more sturdy case. This case may cause early failure due to bent wires.
  5. If you forget to charge it, make sure to bring a powerbank or a charger. You only need 10 minutes of charge to get 80 minutes of playback!

Final Thoughts

Aukey Key Series B80 Wireless Earbuds

Overall, I like the fit and feel of the Aukey Key Series B80 Earbuds, The wire length is long enough that it won’t get stuck behind your neck and pull the ear buds out when you turn your head. The ear buds do not fall out during strenuous actives. With the right ear bud fit, you can block most ambient noise (no noise cancellation). The sound quality is good enough for everyday use.  But I feel the bass isn’t that good. For those that need that extra bass or are audiophiles I would suggest another style or brand. I find most ear buds have good sound but for that deep rich bass, you need an over the ear style.

When I was first asked to review the Aukey Key Series B80 Wireless Earbuds I was a little concerned since there were some negative reviews on Amazon. Some of the issues included lagging, white noise during a song/during dead air, comfort levels, battery issues, and just not being made well. But I’m happy with the pair I received.

Aukey Key Series B80 Wireless Earbuds

I’m not really sure what those reviewer issues were but I found non of them to be true. Fitment issues can be resolved by changing out ear pads. If none of them work, return them. Battery issues may have been because the user did not completely seat the USB-C plug fully into the port. It won’t charge if not completely in! As to lagging and white noise, I haven’t found any issues with that either. I got busy with something and didn’t realize the music had ended, it must have been almost 5 minutes without music before I noticed. I never once heard any of the white noise. I tried watching YouTube movies and movies saved to my hard drive and never had lagging issues.

My thoughts are that they corrected those issues recently. If you have these issues, contact support or return it and get another one.

If you are looking for an up and over and behind the ear sport ear buds with water resistance, I would recommend the Aukey Key Series B80 Wireless Earbuds . Just keep in mind, that these are not on the same level as premium ear buds. They are great ear buds at this price point. If red isn’t your color, they currently come in a grey and black.
