RAVPower 1100mAh Rechargeable Battery and Charger Set for Sony NP-FW50 — Review

RAVPower 1100mAh Rechargeable Battery and Charger Set for Sony NP-FW50

The RAVPower 1100maH Rechargeable Battery and Charger Set for Sony NP-FW50 is a great alternative to Sony branded products and OEM charging for your devices. You get two batteries and a USB charger that you can use in your car with a wall charger (use your cell phone wall charger), or to a portable power bank to charge  your devices. But before I go into the review, I want to share my thoughts on the charger and batteries offered from RAVPower.

I’ve been using the batteries and the charger for several months now and I have to say its a great alternative to the OEM charging accessories. The batteries have more up time than the OEM batteries and now you can charge two batteries while you are shooting with another battery.

I do a variety of photo shoots. Some of the shoots I’m off grid and may not be able to get to an outlet all day. And at other times I’m doing shoots in the studio. Either way its possible to burn through several batteries and in a few hours. It all depends on often you use your flash, the view screen, and if you are sync to another device via WIFI.

For my indoor shoots I normally start with the batteries charged and as they run down I put them on the chargers. Once charged they go to the end of the charged battery kit.

For my trips where I am off grid I take only enough batteries for the job. Usually just 4 to 6 batteries. I will carry one charger and a small power bank to charge batteries while on the hike. I will leave the rest of the batteries in my car and charge on my extra charger using my larger power bank.

If I’m on a road trip or I’m shooting an off road event my charger is plugged in and always charging batteries. During my road trips and off road events I use a lot of power and if I’m shooting at night or away from a charger I can easily go through 4 or batteries.

I found these chargers and batteries help out a lot. This charger and battery set not only makes easy to charge my batteries on the go but it also adds two more batteries to the set.

I have noticed that the RAVPower batteries discharge over time a lot quicker than my OEM and non Sony branded batteries. After about 2 weeks of 100% charge sitting in the camera or the storage case, the batteries drains down to about 40 to 50%. My other batteries stay fully charged for months.

During the charging test I found that RAVPower’s claim of 1.5 hour charge time is correct. But what isn’t mentioned is the charger doesn’t charge both batteries at the same time. The charger charges sequentially. So to completely charge both batteries it will take 3 hours. But you could always pull the charged battery off before the other one is charged. Then pull the other one off once its charged.

I tested the portability charging feature by charging in my car and via a power bank. I used an Anker PowerDrive 2, BlitzWolf® BW-P5 15600mAh Quick Charge 3.0 Power Bank, Anker PowerCore 5000, and a Anker PowerCore+ 20100 USB-C. I found all of these devices charge the batteries in about an hour and half. I never ran out of power and always had fresh batteries ready to go.

Final Thoughts on the RAVPower 1100mAh Rechargeable Battery and Charger Set for Sony NP-FW50

I like this charger and 2 battery set so much that I purchased another set a few weeks ago. I now have six batteries and two RAVPower chargers and an older charger that I can charge all my batteries before photo shoots.

What I don’t like is how quickly the battery discharge when sitting idle. They should last for months like the OEM and my other brand batteries.

I also don’t like that these batteries are rated at 500+ charges (my guess is they will be usable after 500). That isn’t a lot of charging sessions. I believe these batteries should able to be good for years. Now I just don’t charge the batteries to keep them charged.

This charger should have been designed to charge at the same time. You only need one battery at a time, but you could use up a battery faster than the system can charge up the next battery. The next version should have the option to charge at the same time.

Overall these issues are not deal breakers and they shouldn’t be for other users. You just need to plan out how you use your batteries.

The only batteries I keep charged are my two OEM batteries and my older non Sony Branded batteries. These batteries will hold a charge for almost 6 months with minimal discharge.

My RAVPower batteries are allowed to discharge. The night before my shoot or early the next morning my batteries are charged up and packed up for the trip.

When I use up my battery it goes into the charger. Then I will add the next battery to the charger and remove the other one when its full.

At home my chargers are connected to a USB charging hub. On the road,  the chargers are on a car charger but as soon I stop at my shoot location the chargers get plugged into a power bank to charge since my car chargers do not charge when the car isn’t running.
