Exploring the Dirt Roads of Mississippi in the Subaru Forester

One of the things I love to do when I’m visiting family in Mississippi is exploring the old dirt roads of Mississippi. Whenever I have my Subaru Forester I take advantage and take those really bad roads that are muddy or just to rutted out to take my Scion xB or my Mother’s old Toyota Highlander. Generally these old roads lead me to an historic spot or an abandoned school/church sitting in the woods.  But in some cases its just to explore and see what’s down that old road.

You might ask, why a Subaru Forester and not a truck or a 4 wheel drive SUV? The simple answer is that I don’t own one. Even if I owned one, I may not always use it for these trips. Trucks and most 4 Wheel drive vehicles are to large and get horrible gas mileage. For my wifeand myself, we hate spending money on gas. We take that extra unspent cash and put it towards our trips.

For years Subaru has made excellent rally cars and light duty expedition vehicles. Our Subaru is setup with al-terrain tires and can go almost anywhere that an OEM 4 wheel drive SUV can go. Subarus comes all wheel drive standard on their vehicles and with the right ride height and tire/wheel package you can take your Subaru on muddy dirt roads, shallow creek crossing (don’t go past your wheel hubs) and drive through pastures without fear of getting stuck. You just have to be smart and know what your vehicle can and can’t do.

About the Image

I took this shot of the Subaru Forester sitting in a dry section of the of the dirt road surrounded by young pine trees. The shot was taken as I was leaving the Peimont Church that sits abandoned deep in the woods and about an hour before sunset. I used my Sony a6000 and a with my Sony a6000 and a Sony 16-50mm f3.5-5.6 OSS Power Zoom Lens. I then edited the image in Adobe Lightroom CC. I used Topaz Labs A.I. Clear and DXO NIK Collection to clean up the image, remove noise, and recover the lost details.
