When passing through towns in the south I’m always on the lookout for old shotgun houses that are being restored that have been restored. There aren’t that many left and they need to be documented. When I was exploring DeSoto County I spot a rough looking old shogun house in Keachi, Louisiana I got excited and had to stop to take some pictures.
What is a Shotgun House?
The shotgun house, in most cases, were what we call tiny homes today. Most of them are around around 12 feet wide and 2 to 4 rooms deep. These little houses have a small foot print and a developer could put a handful of these on a acre of land. Today many of these old houses have been torn down or added on until they don’t even look like a shotgun house anymore.
Old Shotgun House in Keachi, Louisiana
I haven’t had the chance to learn more about the Old Shotgun House in Keachi, Louisiana. I first saw it in 2018 and then in February, 2020 I saw that someone had painted the house white and did some maintenance work! But the old engine sitting on the porch I saw the first time and the stuff stored (could see the stuff from the road) inside the house hadn’t changed. Just by painting and replacing some of the bad wood, the owner added a few more years to the house.
At some point, I will look more into the story by this old house. When I have some more time I plan on taking some more pictures.
