Back in early June 2020 I was working out in the yard when a large red combine tractor and another large red tractor hauling a grain trailer drove past. A few minutes later a Semi showed up with a grain hopper trailer. All of them pulled up to the large wheat field down the road from me. I’ve been wanting to photograph farmers at work for several years and this was the perfect chance to make a new contact.
Combine at Work in Blue Ridge, Texas
After talking with the operators I found out that they work for a large farming outfit out of Verona, Texas and they lease large small acreage fields in the area where they plant corn, wheat, cotton and other crops throughout the growing seasons.
They generally drive the tractors and equipment from their base of operations to an area where all of their fields are located and work them and then move on to the next location.
I was able to photograph the tractors at work and even ride for the last 20 minutes or so as he operated the combine. This included operating the boom and empty his grain hopper into the following tractor’s grain trailer.
The combine’s ride is actually comfortable and not to rough. It has A/C, sound system, and a computer that can automate the operation of the tractor.
This was a great experience and if any farmers want their harvest, livestock, or show animals photographed, please contact me for details.
About the Images
The pictures were shot by hand on a hazy but sunny day with only about an hour or so of sunlight left. Several pictures were shot through the window of the cab as the combine unloaded its load of grain. I used my Sony a6000 with a Sony SELP18105G E PZ 18-105mm F4 G OSS with a Gobe UV Filter using a monopod. I then edited the images with Adobe Lightroom CC and Topaz Labs Denoise AI and Topaz Labs Sharpen AI and DXO NIK Collection to clean up the images, remove noise, and recover the lost details.
