This week’s random image of the week is from one our stops during our Texas Hill Country Road Trip to San Antonio. The old church in the picture is the First Presbyterian Church of Bartlett.
The First Presbyterian Church of Bartlett – History
This old church building has been around since in 1899. I haven’t found much information on the church such as when the church building closed.
According to a historical narrative from Williamson County Historical Commission some of the fixtures including the original doors, windows, walls, chairs, pews, and flooring has been preserved and stored inside the church. The narrative is interesting and worth the read. Its a good piece of information about the area and how the church was formed. The article doesn’t mention who told the story.
Below is what the Texas Historical Marker says…
Built for congregation originally called Nazareth Church of the central Texas Presbytery, and constituted on Indian Creek in June 1875. reorganized here in 1897. Sanctuary erected in 1899. Victorian architecture. – 1970
The First Presbyterian Church of Bartlett – Our Visit
During our visit we were behind schedule so we didn’t stay long. I did have a chance to photograph the exterior. When I was on the porch photographing the historical marker I happened to look through the windows. Most of the windows had blinds/curtains or blacked out. But I did notice that there were tarps covering items on the floor of the church.
If you look at some older pictures of the church and compare them to the one I took, you will notice that someone is still taking care of the church. They may not be restoring it but they are at least trying to preserve the old church.
While I was photographing the church, I noticed that the neighbors and those driving by would watch us. The drivers would wave at as us when they saw my camera. The church looks to be protected by its neighbors.
I haven’t had much time to research the old church and plan on contacting the Williamson County Historical Commission to see if I can find old pictures and more information about the church. If you know more about the old church or know someone to contact, please contact me. I plan on publishing an article over at VanishingTexas.net once I find more information about the church.
About the Images
The First Presbyterian Church of Bartlett was shot by hand on a gloomy rainy day using my Sony a6000 and the Sony 16-50mm f3.5-5.6 OSS Power Zoom Lens. I used Topaz Labs A.I. Clear and DXO NIK Collection to clean up the image, remove noise, and recover the lost details.
