Sitting on the site or just behind the grounds of the old Keachi Woman’s College is the abandoned Keachi High School. I came across the old school when I came into town to photograph the buildings sitting on Keachi Woman’s College Grounds.
Keachi High School in Keachi, Louisiana – History
For the last couple of days I’ve spent hours looking for information on the old school. I can’t even find a name and the only reference I found was from another photographer referring to the school as the old high school and that it was closed in 1970.
Next time I’m in the area, I’m going to see if I can get closer to the school and find the dedication stone (if there is one) and ask around if I can’t find any information. When I have more information I will update the article.
Keachi High School – My Visit
In the winter months you can see the school but during the growing season the vegetation covers a lot of the school. From a distance I can see the school is in poor shape. I think the roof is falling in in some places. Most of the windows have been boarded up with metal siding.
Once section of the building that looks like a carport has collapsed. The doors look to be closed and locked up. The owners are attempting to keep people out and mowing the grass around the building.
About the Images
The images were shot on gloomy day using my Sony a6000 and my Sony SELP18105G E PZ 18-105mm F4 G OSS with a Gobe UV Filter using a monopod. I then edited the images with Adobe Lightroom CC and Topaz Labs Denoise AI and Topaz Labs Sharpen AI and DXO NIK Collection to clean up the images, remove noise, and recover the lost details.
Luv them old pics
James,
Thanks for posting the pictures. Honestly, I’m impressed that didn’t do what 99% of the people do, and assume the brick building was the women’s college. It was in fact the high school and it was built in the 20s. It closed loooong before 1970, though the baseball diamond behind it (check google earth) was used until the mid-70s. It was a frequent thing for people pay a visit inside,…maybe leave their name on the chalkboard. I went in with my uncle back in 1991, slinking our way to the 2nd floor. He got a real kick out of it when he saw that his name and his childhood friend’s name were still there from the very early 60s. Sadly, the roof is now gone, the stairs are gone and the second floor has completely collapsed. If you want more information on the high school, you might have some luck with the mayor. He knows more about the town than anyone else I’ve ever met.
Thanks for sharing. A friend of my mine spoke with the mayor a while back when she was in town. I’m planning to make another trip out that way and may try to reach out to him. I’d like to get a closer look at the buildings he has access to and get permission to go inside the old school.
