The Condition of the Fairview Church and Cemetery in Tuxedo, Texas

During my week in West Texas,  one of my stops was the Fairview Church and Cemetery in Tuxedo, Texas. When I stopped at the cemetery it was my first time seeing a cemetery without grass covering the graves. The entire cemetery and and surrounding land around the church had the West Texas red dirt covering everything. I didn’t spend much time exploring the graves since it had just finished raining and it was about start up again. Plus, the more you walk in the red mud, the more it sticks to your boots making almost impossible to walk.

As for the church itself, its being maintained. The exterior needs a little paint. The interior is simple and dusty.

I couldn’t find much information about the church and cemetery. If anyone has more information and history of the old church, please contact me.  I would like to add to the article.

About the Images

The images were shot by hand in the middle of the afternoon between the storms with my Sony Nex-3N and a Sony SEL16F28 16mm f/2.8. I then edited the image in Adobe Lightroom. Next, I post processed with Topaz Clarity to add texture, brighten, and bring out the details in the image. Then I removed the dust spots. Finally, I used Topaz DeNoise to remove the noise from the image.

  1. Just wanted to thank you for the lovely photos of this cemetery and church. A relative I never knew is buried there (in 1922) and it took me forever to find him :). His wife and surviving children moved back to Alabama after his death. Thanks to your article, I have a better understanding of where the church and cemetery are located and will be able to concentrate my search for more info!

BTW, is the church ever used? Fabulous old place.

I was born in Stamford Texas and raised at Tuxedo. We owned and lived on the farm beside this cemetery. It was on the SW corner of our farm. My grandparents bought the farm in 1917 across the road from the cemetery. The church is still used for funerals and a few weddings. It is used every first Saturday in May for cemetery workings. This has been the practice for over 100 years. The church at one time had stained glass windows but in recent years was vandalized twice. I have more info on the history of the church. It is located on FM 1661 and is just North of California Creek. Sarah Carlton Thornbury

One of the graves is that of David Warren Cantrell who was the president of the PGA in 1964-65 and an original member of the PGA hall of fame. He is my grandfathers cousin.

I was born in Stamford in 1957 and my parents had a farm on the same road as the cemetery. My Dad worked at the Tuxedo cotton gin and farmed. We moved to the Dallas area in 1958. My grandfather, Tom Jones, made the sign for the cemetery. My grandparents farm was just down the road from the cemetery as well as my great aunt and uncle’s small store. Our farmhouse, my grandparents farmhouse and the store are all gone now. My sister and I visited the cemetery yesterday.
